Wed 1 Sep European Men's Seniors Team Championships - Course Closed
Extended Desc: The European Senior Men’s Team Championship will be hosted at Fairhaven from the Monday 30th August to Saturday 4th September 2010. The championship includes the finest amateur golfers, aged 55 and over, from 19 European countries; England (defending champions), Finland, Scotland, Norway, Ireland, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Denmark, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Netherlands, Portugal, France, Slovenia, Spain, Germany, Poland and Austria. The championship promises to be a very exciting and busy week, with some splendid golf being played throughout. Obviously a championship of this size and importance does not run without the assistance of willing volunteers and the English Golf Union have asked if members would assist with the collection and reporting of scores on the course and in manning scoreboards on the 12th and 18th holes. Volunteers from members, friends and colleagues are required on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the championship. The EGU will provide refreshments and a gift, as well as an invitation to attend the opening and closing receptions. If you are able to spare some time on any or all of these days please contact the Secretary, who can discuss your availability and role. Extended Desc: European Senior Men’s Team Championship Headlines: England and Ireland contest Final – 1.00pm, Saturday 4th September The championship, which concludes tomorrow, will see England and Ireland in the final, a match which will produce some great golf and bring a fitting conclusion to what has been a most enjoyable and successful week. The final day starts at 7.30am tomorrow (Saturday), will see all 19 nations competing in a match-play format; one foursome match followed four single matches. The undoubted highlight being the ‘final’ between Ireland and England, which ‘tees off’ at 1.06pm. Ireland reached the final after a fighting victory over Scotland by a score of 3½ to 1½ . England won an equally hard match against Spain by 3 games to 2. Ireland start as favourites after leading the qualifying section and on handicap, with an average handicap of +2, which includes players such as former Walker Cup star Gareth McGimpsey. England, the defending champions, field a strong team of scratch golfers, including former Lancashire champion and the newly crowned English Senior Champion, Alan Squires. Matches in Flight A include; Switzerland -v- Austria for 7th & 8th places; starting at 11.00am Germany -v- Sweden for 5th & 6th places; starting at 11.42am Spain -v- Scotland for 3rd & 4th places; starting at 12.24pm England -v- Ireland for 1st & 2nd places; starting at 1.06pm With more sunny weather forecast and a feast of exciting golf assured, Fairhaven is definitely the place to be tomorrow.
